5 Tips to Feel Confident in Front of the Camera

Let’s be honest—most people don’t jump in front of a camera and immediately feel like a rockstar. In fact, feeling a little camera-shy is completely normal. Whether you’re stepping in front of the lens for branding photos, family portraits, or a boudoir session, it’s common to worry: “Will I look awkward?” “What do I do with my hands?” or even “Can I really feel confident showing this side of myself?”

Here’s the good news: You don’t have to show up feeling confident! That’s something we build together throughout your experience. As your photographer, I will gently guide and support you every step of the way.

So today, I’m sharing five of my favourite tips to help you shake off those nerves and feel amazing in front of the camera—because confidence isn’t about being perfect, it’s about being present.

Tip #1: Wear Something That Makes You Feel Amazing

Clothes aren’t just clothes—they’re a reflection of how you feel. The right outfit can completely shift your mindset and body language.

Think about the pieces in your wardrobe that make you feel like the best version of yourself. Maybe it’s your go-to blazer, a dress that flows beautifully, or a cozy knit that hugs you just right. Comfort, confidence, and authenticity are always key. Don’t be afraid to choose a few options!

During our pre-session consultation, I’ll help you narrow down what photographs best. I’ve even been known to go shopping with clients to find pieces that help them look and feel amazing.

Tip #2: Work With a Photographer Who Guides You

You don’t need to know how to pose. That’s what I’m here for!

During your session, I will gently guide you through flattering poses and natural movement. We’ll laugh, adjust, and keep things flowing so nothing feels stiff or overly staged. My clients are always surprised by how comfortable they feel once we get started—it’s like hanging out with a friend who happens to be holding a camera.

This isn’t about perfection. It’s about capturing your energy, your personality, your story.

Tip #3: This Session Is About You

Every session has a reason behind it—something worth remembering, celebrating, or claiming for yourself. Maybe you’re refreshing your brand as you step into a new chapter. Maybe you’re capturing the way your kids are right now, before they grow up just a little more. Or maybe… it’s finally time to do something just for you.

Whatever brought you here, that reason matters. When you stay connected to it, the nerves start to fade—and the real you begins to shine through.

Tip #4: Take a Breath—Literally

Before your session, take a few moments just for you. Deep breathing, a quick meditation, even a slow walk or stretch can calm those pre-session jitters.

During the session, I’ll remind you to relax your shoulders, soften your hands, and breathe. The best photos often happen in those quiet, in-between moments—when you exhale, smile softly, and let your guard down.

Tip #5: Trust the Process (And Your Photographer)

You don’t have to have it all figured out. That is what I am here for!

From planning your wardrobe and prepping your space, to guiding you through your shoot and helping you select your favourite images—I’ve got you. This process is designed to feel easy, elevated, and empowering.

Your only job? Show up and allow yourself to be seen.
